Hinzman named to lead UAF research

Permafrost hydrologist and longtime professor Larry Hinzman has been selected to serve as vice chancellor for research at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Hinzman has served as interim vice chancellor since March 2015.

“UAF leads the world in Arctic research, and our capabilities extend far beyond the North to include every continent, the world’s oceans, the entire atmospheric system, the far reaches of space and deep into the Earth’s mantle. Our physical, biological and social scientists, our engineers and our creative artists are renowned both throughout Alaska and nationally and internationally,” Hinzman said. “I am humbled to serve amongst them and to work with UAF’s faculty, staff and students to resolve the science, engineering and policy challenges facing our state, nation and world.”

Workforce Wednesday: Hands-on internships in Alaska | KTVA Anchorage CBS 11

The position is typically a win in the workforce. Businesses get eager workers while interns get hands-on experience in a chosen career field.

Cari-Ann Ketterling with Alaska Process Industry Career Consortium joined Daybreak to talk about the numerous businesses in Alaska who are currently looking for interns.

Granite Construction, Chugach Corporation, Alyeska Pipeline,” Ketterling said. “And in addition to internships we also offer externships. Internships are within your field of study. Externships are outside your field of study. So we offer those to secondary teachers to get experience in the industries in Alaska and bring that information to their students who are planning their future careers.”

Calista Corporation is also looking for interns.

Workforce Wednesday: Process tech careers | KTVA Anchorage CBS 11

Cari-Ann Ketterling with the Alaska Process Industry Careers Consortium (APICC) and Zarin Taylor, a former production operator at BP, joined Daybreak Wednesday to talk about jobs in the process technology field. Whether you’re working at an electric company or and oil production facility, Taylor said the job is similar no matter where you go.

“We’re controlling the process, we’re controlling the work that supports the process,” Taylor said. “We’re starting the equipment and putting a real emphasis on safety and quality control for our product with everything we do.”

Process tech graduates can earn an average of six figures per year after five years of experience. How can you get started in the field?
