Hinzman named to lead UAF research

Permafrost hydrologist and longtime professor Larry Hinzman has been selected to serve as vice chancellor for research at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Hinzman has served as interim vice chancellor since March 2015.

“UAF leads the world in Arctic research, and our capabilities extend far beyond the North to include every continent, the world’s oceans, the entire atmospheric system, the far reaches of space and deep into the Earth’s mantle. Our physical, biological and social scientists, our engineers and our creative artists are renowned both throughout Alaska and nationally and internationally,” Hinzman said. “I am humbled to serve amongst them and to work with UAF’s faculty, staff and students to resolve the science, engineering and policy challenges facing our state, nation and world.”

Bill Aimed at Helping Younger Fishermen

As young Alaskans gather in Juneau for the sixth annual Young Fishermen’s Summit this week to explore ways to get a leg up in an increasingly challenging and expensive industry, Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, a member of the House Fisheries Committee, is trying to help. Kreiss-Tomkins and other members of the committee are working on a bill to create community banks to buy limited entry permits from people selling out in order to be able to lease them to people primarily in rural communities who cannot afford to buy them outright.

Alaska Sea Grant Invests Over $1 Million in Research

Alaska Sea Grant has awarded more than $1 million to six new research projects focused on critical coastal environmental and economic challenges in Alaska.

‘We selected these six because they are creative and innovative research projects that contribute to our focus areas in healthy coastal ecosystems, sustainable fisheries and resilient communities and economies,’ said Ginny Eckert, Alaska Sea Grant research director.
